Bass Trombone: Virginia Grand Military Band, Capital Wind Symphony, Legacy Brass Quintet.

Conductor: Montgomery Village Community Band, Montgomery Village, MD.  MVCB is a 75+ member foundation-sponsored community band, serving Montgomery County, MD.  Mixed repertoire, including band classics, overtures and transcriptions as well as popular, movie and show music, and patriotic music. 

Free Lance Bass Trombone: Miscellaneous engagements in the Washington, DC area.

President: Serendipity Press, publisher of fine music editions and books about music. Nationwide distribution with distributors in twelve states and England. Predominantly brass ensembles and band music.

Member of review board of Online Trombone Journal.

Recent Positions: 

Conductor: The Bangor Band, 1985-1997, also 1973-1976.

Traditional New England town band, performing continuously since its founding in 1859. Performances year around. Mixed repertoire, including band classics, overtures and transcriptions as well as popular, movie and show music, patriotic music and Dixieland.

Bass Trombone: The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, 1965-1997

Regional per service orchestra, Christopher Zimmerman, Music Director; Werner Torkanowsky, previous Music Director. All the standard orchestral repertoire.

Bass Trombone: Fairfax City Band, 1998 and 1999; National Concert Band of America, 1997 to 2005.

Adjunct Instructor of Applied Trombone: University of Maine at Augusta, 1995-1997.

Part time instruction for trombone majors in jazz and commercial music program.

Teacher: Small studio of advanced trombone students, as well as teaching all levels of students on a variety of instruments..

1996-97 University of Maine at Augusta, Augusta, Maine: Adjunct Instructor in Applied Trombone, part time. Instruction for trombone majors in jazz and commercial music degree program. Intermediate Music Theory and Ear Training (Fall '96) Studio Pedagogy Practicum (Fall, 96)

1973-79 Colby College, Waterville, Maine: Director of the College Band, Instructor in Instrumental Music. Part-time band director for 1500-student liberal arts college. Marching band, concert band, jazz band. Individual instruction on brass instruments; independent study programs for students on recorder, tenor banjo and miscellaneous instruments.

1971-73 Northern Conservatory of Music, Bangor, Maine: Four-year college preparing music educators. Responsibilities included trombone majors, trumpet and horn for non-majors, brass ensembles, coaching for junior and senior recitals. 

K through 12

1999-2000 St. Stephen's and St. Agnes Schools, Alexandria, VAHigh School band and orchestra, middle school advanced band, middle school orchestra.

1989-92 John R. Graham School, Veazie, Maine: Band and Instrumental Music teacher, elementary and middle school. Beginning band classes, sixth grade band, junior high band. Part time.

1979-80 Brewer H. S. Brewer, Maine: Director of Bands And Choruses. Eighty-piece marching and concert band, jazz band, 150-voice chorus. Elementary and advanced music theory classes; music history and appreciation classes for general students.

1965-70 MSAD 22, Hampden, Maine: Director of Instrumental Music. Beginning band classes; sixth grade and junior high band; high school marching, concert and jazz bands. Individual instruction for band students. Built program from nearly non-existent handful of students to a strong, large band with community support.

1964-65 Erskine Academy, S. China, Maine: Band Director. Small band program in a rural high school. Part time while completing undergraduate studies.

Private Studio

1993-2004:  Small studio of advanced trombone students, also teaching students at all levels on a variety of instruments

1971-93: The Gordon Bowie Studio, Bangor, Maine. Weekly half-hour instrumental lessons by appointment to students of all ages. Lessons on: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, recorder, harmonica, guitar, banjo and bass. Instructor capable of demonstrating proficient performance on all instruments taught.

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra: 1965-1997. Bass Trombone: 1965-1978; Principal Trombone: 1978-1984; Bass Trombone: 1984-1997. Thirty-two years' orchestral experience under four music directors and numerous guest conductors. Standard orchestral repertoire.

The McLean Symphony, McLean, VA: 1997-2002. Bass Trombone.

Stammtisch Band: 1966-present; Leader, 1975-present. An authentic German beer hall band, performing imported German repertoire at civic events, weddings and commercial venues.

Hal Wheeler Dance Orchestra: 1971-1997. General business music. Performing on trombone and electric bass.
